Professional poker player Dutch Boy encounters a Christmas crisis and auctions off a 14k gold bracelet

Post by Bookmaker »

Dutch Boyd, a professional Texas Hold'em player, desperately needs money for Christmas presents, and he hopes poker fans will help him out of this economic crisis.

Boyd has put one of his tournament gold bracelets up for auction on eBay, a world-renowned online auction site, until December 22, 2012. The gold bracelet was won by him at the $2,500 Doyle Brunson Five Diamond WPT Classic in 2008. The tournament was held at the Las Vegas Paragio and he received $162,605.

He said the gold bracelet was worth $2,644 when melted, though he only offered $1,500. This gold bracelet is 14k gold, that is, 58.33% gold content, and weighs 83 grams. Boyd said the spot price of gold at auction was $1,690 per ounce or $54.61 per gram, so he calculated the price of the gold bracelet to be $54.61 x 83 x .5833, which equals $2,644. His calculations seem to be a bit low, because $1,690 an ounce is equivalent to $59.61 per gram, which means that the gold bracelet is equivalent to $2,886 when melted.

When the item was announced for auction, 22 buyers offered a whopping $2,305. However, the amount of margin has not yet been reached.

Boyd has auctioned several items on eBay over the past few years, ranging from toy knives and electronics to household items. Several of the items he auctioned were also poker-related. In August and September 2011, he auctioned off three $25 WSOP chips and two $500 Wynn Club tournament chips, worth a total of $158.

eBay currently has a gold bracelet from WSOP's first event in 2006 up for auction, but Boyd says it's not his. There are only 2 bids for this gold bracelet, but the price is as high as $4,950 and there is no margin.

This isn't the first time eBay has auctioned a poker tournament gold bracelet. 2 years ago, 1991 WSOP champion Brad Daugherty auctioned off his main event gold bracelet at $30,100, but it didn't sell because it didn't reach the margin. In November 2010, Paul "Eskimo" Clark's 1999 WSOP Razz gold bracelet was sold for $4,050, though Clark was not the seller. Earlier over there, T.J. Cloutier's WSOP gold bracelet was also on sale at a Texas pawnshop for $4,006. Online poker site Cake Poker bought the gold bracelet and used it as a promotion, eventually returning it to Cloutier.

The most famous eBay gold bracelet was sold by 2008 WSOP Main Event winner Peter Eastgate. After selling the gold bracelet for $147,500, he announced his temporary retirement from poker and donated the proceeds from the sale to UNICEF.
